What is semiotics semiotics is the study of signs or meaning-making.

this is exploring the signs and symbols as a very important part of communication,

semiotics has two founding fathers those begin Ferdinand De Saussure and Charles Sanders pierce.


What is a sign? A sign is something which refers to something else

Sign = Signifier + Signified


Signifier = any material thing ie. facial expression

Signified = the concept that the signifier is representing

Sign = thisi si the smallest unit of the meaning


Sound- image

Signs are arbitrary.


Signs can have a multitude of different meanings


Denotation - the basic word ie Rubber is a the word but rubber can stand for multiple different things



Connotation - this is used to associate to the cultural meaning of the sign and are usually connected to the viewers culture, age, gender race and religion, one thing for me might mean something else for you .
