Photography in Political Propaganda

A picture tells a thousand words.

Within this blog post I will be discussing how photography is used to portray Politicians/World Leaders.

In Definition Politics is the act of influencing peoples and their beliefs on multiple levels.

The effectiveness of an image starts with its framing, this could be done by cutting off and cropping civilians at a protest.

We are shown a Partial Reality.

Fig.1

Fig.1 New York Magazine – Kellyanne Conway

In figure one we can see the subject – Kellyanne Conway, She is President Trump’s House counsellor and campaign manager, she holds a very high spot in the heirchy of the American politics but this headshot of her does not convey any of it.

The way that the photographer has portrayed her made her seem as if she has no idea of what she is doing, a political figure is never to be shot in this way.

In the coming sentences i will be discussing in which ways i believe the photograph is off putting and non flattering to the subject.

The lighting, the photographer has used very unflattering lighting- it seems to be one key light which is pointing straight at her face – I can tell this by the lack of shadows in her face.

One of her eyes looks out of proportion compared to the rest of her facial features – this could have been easily fixed by asking the subject to tilt her face to the side.

The image seems to have no retouching whatsoever, some light edits would have been tasteful if not overdone.
